Murrumbidgee Catchment Management Authority

Our Role

Our key roles can be broadly described under the following five sub-headings.

The specific functions of the Murrumbidgee Catchment Management Authority (CMA) are described in Section 15 of the CMA Act.

Planning and Investment

 

  • Develop and implement the Murrumbidgee Catchment Action Plan, investment strategy, and annual implementation plans.
  • Make decisions on State & Commonwealth expenditure.
  • Manage National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality (NAP) and Natural Heritage Trust contracts.
  • Provide financial assistance for natural resource management on-ground works in the catchment.
  • Deliver incentives through Property Vegetation Plans (PVP) and other mechanisms.
  • Provide advice to Local Government and State Government agencies on the impact of environmental planning instruments on natural resources.
  • Broker sponsorship and investment through emerging credit markets.
  • Oversee the implementation of the Coleamablly Irrigation Area (CIA) and Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area (MIA) Land and Water Managment Plans (LWMP's).  Provide local decision making when adjustments are required to LWMP programs.

Native Vegetation

 

  • Conduct and manage Property Vegetation Plan's (PVP's).
  • Conduct and manage native vegetation consents under the Native Vegetation Act 2003.
  • Monitor participating landholders to ensure contractual responsibilities of a PVP are met.

Water

 

  • Manage environmental water licences and water conservation trusts.
  • Undertake community consultation on water management issues such as water sharing plans.
  • Help communities make decisions on water management.
  • Establish and manage an Environmental Water Trust to hold water allocations for environmental purposes.

On-ground works

 

  • Undertake or facilitate on-ground NRM works for the purposes of catchment activities, eg. river rehabilitation, native vegetation managment and salinity improvement programs.
  • Manage soil conservation and erosion improvement projects.
  • Help landholders undertake works to improve catchment help.

Community Engagement

 

  • Help landholders undertake works or try new land management practices to improve catchment health.
  • Provide technical advice and support on vegetation management issues.
  • Fostering participation of Traditional Owners in the management of the catchments natural resources.
  • Consult Aboriginal communities on the Murrumbidgee Catchment Action Plan, natural resource programs and investment strategy.
  • Supporting the community and Landcare in natural resource management and sustainable agriculture.
  • Provide information and support to the community.
