Sites between the Eunony and Gobba bridges at Wagga Wagga will benefit from restoration works undertaken by the Maldhangilana River Restoration team to maximise environmental outcomes and Aboriginal people’s involvement in Natural Resource Management.
The Maldhangilana River Restoration team consists of ten Aboriginal men being employed with Wagga Wagga City Council to undertake the works required along the river. On-ground works include the re-establishing native vegetation, wetland restoration, weed removal, construction of fencing for grazing management, nesting box construction, cultural tours and Aboriginal site identification.
Whilst undertaking the works the participants will also complete a Certificate II in Conservation & Land Management through the NSW TAFE, Riverina Institute, Primary Industries Centre. Statements of attainments will also be undertaken in Tourism and Aboriginal Site Identification modules through the Riverina Community College and the NSW TAFE, Riverina Institute, Primary Industries Centre.
The Murrumbidgee CMA has contracted Wagga Wagga City Council to implement the project. Partnerships have been developed with Gannambarra Enterprises, Group Training Employment Specialists (GTES), NSW TAFE, Riverina Institute Primary Industries Centre, Department of Lands, Riverina Water and the Riverina Community College.
